The entire fifth floor of the new building is devoted to Tate Exchange, a flexible space for artists and the public “to collaborate, test ideas and discover new perspectives on life.” A museum in the 21st century is no longer just a repository of work, but an active house of co-creation. The takeaway from the Tate Modern’s new wing, which includes stunning subterranean spaces devoted to performance art, can be summed up as this: Art is not an object but an experience. A notice on the viewing terrace asked us to “Please respect our neighbours’ privacy,” yet for the rest of our museum experience we had been encouraged to look, to question, to interact. With its commanding location on the banks of the Thames, opposite St Paul’s Cathedral, the new Tate Modern has ten floors of unique and varied spaces, plus the vast and versatile Turbine Hall and Tanks.I and my fellow observers were faced with a dilemma. A dramatic new building to the south, the ‘Switch House’, boasts brand new gallery levels for Tate’s global collection, and generous public spaces for the millions who visit to see special exhibitions, enjoy social spaces, and learn about art from around the world. The launch of the new Tate Modern this year has been the most significant moment for the gallery since its opening. When Tate Modern opened at the turn of the millennium, it was an instant icon, transforming an obsolete power station into the world’s most visited gallery of modern and contemporary art.
